The United Nations (UN) World Oceans Day is commemorated annually on June 8th to raise awareness about the importance of the oceans, which serve as a life supply for humans and all other organisms on the planet.
The oceans cover more than 70% of the planet. It is our life supply, providing sustenance for mankind and all other living things on the planet.
The ocean generates at least 50% of the planet’s oxygen, supports the majority of the planet’s biodiversity, and serves as the primary source of protein for over a billion people worldwide. Not to mention that the ocean is critical to our economy, with an estimated 40 million people employed in ocean-related industries by 2030.
With 90% of large fish populations decimated and 50% of coral reefs lost, we are depleting the ocean faster than it can replace itself. We must collaborate to establish a new balance with the ocean that no longer depletes its wealth but rather restores its vibrancy and gives it new life.
Theme
“Awaken New Depths” is the theme for World Oceans Day 2024.
- The UN is collaborating with decision-makers, indigenous leaders, scientists, private sector executives, civil society, celebrities, and youth activists to demonstrate how our connection with the ocean must urgently shift, as our efforts thus far have only scratched the surface.
- To inspire universal support for the ocean, we must awaken new depths.
History
- World Oceans Day was first proposed during the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro.
- On December 5, 2008, the UN General Assembly declared June 8 to be World Oceans Day each year.
- The day was established with the goal of raising awareness about humans’ relationship with the oceans.
- Every year, the UN Division for Ocean Affairs and the Law of the Sea hosts events to raise public awareness.
Significance
- Climate change and global warming are among the most serious issues that humanity has ever confronted. As we try to address this catastrophe, we must first recognize the importance of the seas in maintaining natural balance.
- The oceans manage world temperature and provide an abundant source of food and medicine. The oceans should not be abused, and it is past time that we all work together to restore their health.
- We can accomplish this by using sustainable methods and working together to create a better world.
