The 5th of May, 2024, was designated as World Cartoonist’s Day.

Importance:

The day honors how cartoons, with their comments on pop culture, social issues, and current events, have influenced the media landscape.

Background:

The first cartoon to be popular on the commercial front debuted in the pages of the New York World on May 5, 1895.
The New York World published a single-strip, full-color illustration of a little youngster with large ears, no shoes, and a mischievous face.

This comic strip by American comic strip writer and illustrator Richard Outcault, first titled “Hogan’s Alley” and then renamed “The Yellow Kid,” was the first cartoon to be financially successful.
