African World Heritage Day is held yearly on May 5 around the world to raise awareness about the need of maintaining Africa’s cultural and natural legacy.
African World Heritage Day 2024 was observed on May 5, 2024. The day is observed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), in partnership with the African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) and its partners.
Theme:
The African World Heritage Fund (AWHF) invites African States Parties, including heritage professionals, civil society organizations, local communities, and youth, to celebrate the ninth edition of this international day under the theme “Safeguarding Africa’s Heritage through Education,” aligning with the African Union’s 2024 theme of “Educate and Skill Africa for the 21st Century.”
Aim:
UNESCO aspires to encourage cooperation in preserving African history at local, regional, and global levels. Its primary goal is to target young people.
Background:
The 38th session of the UNESCO General Conference in November 2015 declared May 5 of each year as African World Heritage Day.
