World Cartoonist Day

Every year on May 5, people all over the world commemorate World Cartoonists Day to honor the creative spirits who create cartoons. Today honors cartoonists and their works, which for more than a century have offered both pleasure and social insight.

The 5th of May, 2024, was designated as World Cartoonist’s Day.

Importance:

The day honors how cartoons, with their comments on pop culture, social issues, and current events, have influenced the media landscape.

Background:

The first cartoon to be popular on the commercial front debuted in the pages of the New York World on May 5, 1895.
The New York World published a single-strip, full-color illustration of a little youngster with large ears, no shoes, and a mischievous face.

This comic strip by American comic strip writer and illustrator Richard Outcault, first titled “Hogan’s Alley” and then renamed “The Yellow Kid,” was the first cartoon to be financially successful.

The National Cartoonist Society (NCS) created World Cartoonist Day in 1990 as a way to recognize and honor those who devote their lives to the craft of cartooning.
