Bharat Bandh on August 21, 2024: Protests around the country over the latest verdict on reservations by the Supreme Court are anticipated.

Bharat Bandh

The bandh’s principal goal is to challenge the Supreme Court’s ruling and advocate for its reversal.

The Reservation Bachao Sangharsh Samiti has planned a statewide Bharat Bandh for tomorrow, August 21, in protest of the Supreme Court’s recent decision on reservations for Scheduled Castes (SC) and Scheduled Tribes (ST). According to Time of India, numerous SC/ST groups in Rajasthan have supported the call for a bandh.

In anticipation of probable disturbances, police have been directed to increase security measures throughout all districts. Director General of Police (DGP) UR Sahoo acknowledged that Superintendents of Police (SPs) had been given additional instructions to ensure law and order during the demonstration.

“We have asked our officials to meet with the groups that started the bandh and market associations to promote better cooperation,” DGP Sahoo said in an interview with TOI.

Why is Bharat Bandh?

The Bharat Bandh was triggered by a recent Supreme Court decision that allows states to create sub-categories within the SC and ST groupings. The rule attempts to priority reservations for people deemed most in need, triggering heated debate in a variety of sectors. The major goal of the bandh is to challenge the Supreme Court’s ruling and lobby for its reversal.

The demonstration is expected to be supported by a number of social and political organisations, with participants hoping to call attention to what they consider a ‘unfair’ legal verdict.

What’s closed: Security Preparations.

In response to fears about probable violence during the bandh, senior police officials held a preparation meeting via video conference with divisional commissioners, district magistrates, and top police personnel.

Western Uttar Pradesh has been identified as especially sensitive, requiring more law enforcement vigilance. Officials are putting in place stringent safety precautions to protect the public during the upcoming protests.

While public transport and many businesses normally close during such strikes, critical services, such as ambulances, will remain operational to protect public safety.
